September brings the beginning of a new school year and I thought it would be a good chance to chat with one of our School Resource Officers about what they do and how they can help students, teachers and parents.
This month, Cst. Corridawne Mackenzie will join us for our monthly Twitter chat. Cst. Mackenzie is one of six school resource officers whose role is to provide education, counseling, crime prevention , community relations and investigations to schools throughout the City.
The School Resource Officer program allows police to serve as a daily resource to faculty, students, parents and the community within the school environment. Presentations relating to safety, crime prevention, substance abuse, life skills, the law, and the justice system are provided and School Resource Officers take reports and investigate incidents within the school. In some cases, mediation, warnings, and diversion may bring about a successful resolution to the complaint. In other cases, a criminal charge may result.
We will also release results from the “A Safer You, A Safer Me” campaign that was launched a couple weeks ago. This will include the number of warnings and actual tickets we handed out.
Don’t miss it! This month’s #askSPS chat goes tomorrow, Friday, September 20, 2013 at 2:30 p.m.
